His Mustache

I've recently been inspired to do some line drawings. I needed more practice drawing the human figure and faces. Luckily I subscribe to ESPN magazine so there's a lot of good athletic photos in there. Hopefully you can tell but the guy on the left is Adrian Peterson.

After that I tried drawing some vehicles. I started out with the Vespa. I wanted to draw a Pagani Zonda but that didn't turn out as successful.

The pose for Bubble Mouse was inspired from me being completely over drawing this circular character but my animation teacher making it mandatory to draw him.

And this is Rummage! My most successful character design! I'll try to draw him in different poses and bring him to life! He was inspired by our lamb child, Woolie, who is so adorable!

Since Bubble Mouse, I've progressed in my character design and have incorporated shapes other than circles.

Bubble Mouse

A while back I took an animation class. I met a lot of great people and learned the most from them. (Thank you Jessica and Eddie!) Here's a characterI created. I didn't name him because I began despising him. And compared to the rest of the class, I was quite the amatuer and would joke about how I couldn't create a character so I made one with circles.

With our character, we put them in poses and shaded them.

Can you tell I was trying to do the most ridiculous poses for a round cute mouse. I need to shade this sometime.

Yippie!! Classes started back up yesterday! I'm taking Drawing & Composition and Intro. To Product Design. I'm going to try to get away with making everything toy related so I can build up my resume. Here are some doodles I made. The first one is from class (while we were on break of course...no. I need to stop lying to myself. Again, I learn better when I'm drawing.)

The rest of these were just for fun. As you can see, I like cute things.

Good Mistake

My friend Amanda got married this past weekend and it was such a beautiful wedding. You can tell that they have affected so many people and that they are loved by many.

I painted/drew her wedding present. Originally it started as a painting on 3 skateboards. The painting was a couple running away from a carnival. The people were going to be painted and their clothes would be cut out in cloth. After I was done with it, I felt that the people were too cute and couldn't imagine anyone hanging it in there house.

I sanded it and drew a cornet on it with a sharpie and then glazed it. Why a cornet? Well because like a couple of months before the wedding I randomly asked her if she ever played an instrument and she said that she played a cornet for like 5 minutes. I didn't know what to draw on top of the sanded skateboard so the cornet just kind of came to me.

MOCA Visit

Last night I went with a class to MOCA (The Museum Of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles). It was awesome! Our class already ended but we love each other so much that we want to have more field trips like this one!

No, not final posting sillies... but yes, this is the final project for my Intro to Graphic Design class.

We had to create a cover and magazine spread for Print Magazine. There were a list of topics we had to choose from all relating to the history of graphic design. At first I wanted to do a caveman article, but the cover and spread was a disaster!! After going over it in class I hated everything about it and started over, topic and all.

I choose to do the evolution of typeface. I'm very happy with how everything turned out.
I based the cover on how people use to design typefaces. No computer, but on a grid and very specific guidelines to get precise measurements of the curves of the typeface.

I knew I wanted just a single letter on the cover to focus on and my teacher suggested to have a classic more traditional font morph into something more current. I chose a more ornate font to represent traditional and a boxy sharp and stylized font for the current. I wanted the current side to have Illustrator guidelines because that's what people would use now to make or alter a typeface.

The spread deviates from the cover but the teacher said it worked because of the blues. I wanted a spread to show off as many different typefaces as possible. So each word on there is a different typeface. And the article would talk about how typeface has evolved.

Save Nemo!

This project was to create a poster that voiced an opinion or promoted a cause. I wanted to do something fun and cartoony so I decided to make a poster to warn against flushing fish. I guess after Finding Nemo came out kids were flushing fish down the toilet thinking they would release the fish to its natural habitat.

Code Open

This poster was created for my Intro Graphic Design class. The project was to take 2 random words given by our teacher and create anything we wanted out of it. I loved how our teacher was very flexible in what we could create out of it. Some examples were books, cd covers, a product, stuff like that.

I chose the words "Code Open." It reminded me of a Speakeasy back in the 1920's were prohibition was in effect. And the idea of having to say a code to get into one of the speakeasy clubs. I decided to do a new LA nightclub that would celebrate the roaring '20's called Code: Open. The advertisement would be a 3 page magazine spread inside of Los Angeles Magazine in the Special Advertisement section.

I wanted the martini poster to have an art deco feel because that was prevalent at the time and it's a good attention getter. For the spread, I wanted it to look like a mock-up of the club. I found some pictures on Flickr of a nightclub that fits Code: Open's style. I made the pictures look like sketches in Photoshop and it's placed in front of a grid. The teacher didn't really like the grid, she would've liked something that fit the era better. I'll have to go back and make some fixes when I put it in my portfolio.

I've been taking Graphic Design classes at Otis College of Art & Design. I'm loving my classes! I get to draw in class. How awesome is that?!? My first semester Summer '09 classes are Intro to Graphic Design and Fundamentals of 2D design.

Illustrator

I would like to devote this post to my growing passionate love for Illustrator. Yes, it's that deep of a love. Gerali may be mildly jealous of it, and because it frustrates him. haha. Anyway, I've been spending a lot of time with the program and found it to be a great tool in finalizing my pictures. I've always been the one to do a lot of doodling and just stop there. Adding color has never been my strength, but it's very easy to play around with color and test and retest.

There are a lot of great Illustrator tutorials online. Here are some of the stuff I did based off of tutorials.
This is the first Illustrator picture I did back in January. I got it from a cool graphics blog called Spoon Graphics.

It's very similar to his. I've moved some of the ninjas positions and that's about it! It was a great first time tutorial.

Spoon Graphics had a list of 50 tutorials designers should know.

And there they have a 30 Day Illustrator Crash Course. This is a great tutorial! It's definitely where I got a lot of my Illustrator knowledge. It helps to mess around and experiment on your own too. It took me less than 30 days to go through, they are all very easy and fun lessons.

At end of the crash course you get to make a logo. I decided to make my own using what I learned

Lastly, I did this bunny tutorial. Everything is again pretty similar, I changed color and a
placement of some facial features. But he's cute!

I got the idea to make sock puppets for the poster after watching Good Eats on Food Network. It was a lot of fun! Gerali and I had a photoshoot with the little guys.

Edgar The Dinosaur

My friend Catherine from high school asked me to help her out with a present for her boyfriend. They have this dinosaur finger puppet named Edgar and she wanted to turn it into cartoon form and print it on a shirt for him.

Here's final Edgar. I decided to throw him on the green background which I suggested would be a good color for the shirt.
